hair how-to: braided top knot

College Beauty Blogger Allie Giordano of Miss Glambition is sharing her favorite beauty tips, tricks, and trends. Here, she shows you a fun twist on a classic 'do.
Whether you overslept and are rushing out the door, or you’re getting ready for a night out with friends, this small braided detail is an easy way to upgrade your typical top knot and add some fun to your hair. To get the look, just follow these simple steps!

1. Secure your hair in a high ponytail (where you want the bun to ultimately be).
2. Take a small section from pony, and braid it all the way to the bottom; secure with a clear elastic.
3. Twist the remaining larger section of hair until the entire ponytail is in a tight twist. Wrap the twisted hair around the base of the ponytail to create a bun. Secure it in place with a hair tie.
5. Take the small braid from step 2, and wrap it around the bun and secure tightly with bobby pins.
6. To finish off the look, apply a mist of hairspray, and you’ll be ready to head out the door!

The 7 Hottest Spring Hairstyles—and How to Get Them!

The New Braid

How It's Different: This look is more about textured twists than the traditional braiding technique!
Who's It's Best For: Since it's basically a bunch of small twists, this style works best with hairthat's shoulder length or longer.
Key Products To Nail The Style: Lots of small hair elastics to secure all the twists.
Tip For Pulling It Off: Instead of actually braiding your hair, twist different sized sections of hair back and secure with rubber bands; then weave them through each other until they form a braid-like shape.

The Look: Knotted braid up-do
The Tip:
1. Part your hair down the middle. Section off two large chunks of hair on each side of the part in front of your ears.
2. Take one section and split it in two chunks. Knot the section going toward the back of your head and secure it with an elastic. Repeat with the other side.
3. Split your leftover hair diagonally from the crown of your hair to the nape of your neck. Knot both of those sections. You'll have four knotted pieces.
4. Take the two front sides and pin them back and together with bobby pins. Take the lower knotted piece and wrap it around the other two and pin.
5. Grab the leftover bottom piece and wrap it around the other three, securing with pins. You'll have created a messy bun.
6. Spread the knots out so it isn't too perfect. For extra texture, rub a washcloth over your strands to make it a little puffy and and messy-cool.
